Cyberpunk 2077 Won’t Support Ray-Tracing On AMD Cards

Cyberpunk 2077 will not support ray-tracing on AMD graphics cards, CD Projekt Red has confirmed. At least not from day one, that is. There is still a ray – or dare we say trace – of hope for the feature to eventually get ported to AMD GPUs. But it’s neither a priority nor something CDPR is ready to promise for the time being.

At the same time, some degree of ray-tracing support will be available to owners of NVIDIA-made RTX-series GPUs from the very first day of the game’s market availability. The reason for the disparity apparently has mostly to do with the delay between AMD and NVIDIA’s latest hardware. As the two fierce rivals took different approaches to doing ray-tracing calculations. So developing ray-tracing support is a considerably different process depending on whether you’re targeting one or the other’s graphics cards.

Meanwhile, AMD claims its newly launched Big Navi GPUs outperform all of NVIDIA’s latest GeForce RTX 30-series offerings. Which is a pretty big promise, considering they’re also cheaper than their direct competitors. But it’s obviously going to take a while until developers start taking advantage of that computational prowess.

CDPR, for its part, says it’s already collaborating with AMD in an effort to figure out ray-tracing support for Cyberpunk 2077 on the company’s new hardware.
